Exploring the nexus of electricity consumption, economic growth, energy prices and technology innovation in Malaysia

چکیده
This study principally attempts to investigate the relationship between electricity consumption on the one hand and economic growth, energy prices and technology innovation in Malaysia on the other over the period, 1970–2009. The results of this study indicate that electricity consumption and its determinants are cointegrated. Specifically, the empirical results show that income positively affects electricity consumption, while energy prices and technology innovation negatively affect it in Malaysia over a long run. The Granger causality results reveal that technology innovation Granger-cause economic growth and electricity consumption in Malaysia. Moreover, we find that electricity consumption and economic growth Granger-cause each other both in the short and in the long run. Therefore, policymakers should increase investment in electricity infrastructure to ensure that electricity supply is sufficient for economic growth and development and at the same time encourage technology innovation to minimise the usage of fossil fuels. This could strike a balance between environmental quality and economic growth in Malaysia. 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The Effect of Natural Gas Prices on Gas Consumption by Iranian Industries
Natural gas has an advantageous position compared to other energy carriers in policy making of energy consumption due to its many advantages, especially in terms of environmental indicators. In Iran, the industrial sector is considered as one of the important sectors of natural gas consumption. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between natural gas prices and indu...
متن کاملInvestigating Asymmetry of Prices and Productivity of Energy Carriers in Iran’s Agricultural Sector
Energy carriers are one of the most important inputs in the agricultural sector. These inputs have been the foundation of the development and transition of the agricultural sector from the traditional stage to the industrial stage. The energy per capita marginal consumption in Iran’s agricultural sector is 3.2 times greater than its global average. Therefore, it is essential to save and optimal...
متن کاملThe effect of increasing electricity price on rebound effect in Iran by computable general equilibrium
The main goal of policies to increase the energy efficiency is reducing energy consumption, but this goal is limited by the rebound effect. In the literature of energy economics, there are two types of non-price and market tools to reduce rebound effects. Among the market tools, energy taxation is a favored approach. In the Iranian economy, where the prices of energy carriers, including electri...
متن کاملThe Relationship between Electricity Consumption and Economic Growth in the Selected Member Countries of the International Energy Agency (IEA): An ARDL Bounds Test Approach
In this study, the causality links between electricity consumption and economic growth are investigated for Turkey, the United Kingdom, Spain, Belgium and United States covering the period from 1964 to 2014. The results of autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) approach, bounds testing and error correction model show that there is a positive one-way and statistically significant causality moving...
متن کاملExploring the Trade Openness, Energy Consumption and Economic Growth Relationship in Iran by Bayer and Hanck Combined Cointegration and Causality Analysis
This paper aims to investigate the direction of causality between economic growth, energy consumption and trade openness in case of Iran for the period 1967–2012. We apply the newly developed combined cointegration test proposed by Bayer and Hanck (2013). Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) is applied to determine the direction of causality between these three variables. The result of Bayer-Ha...
